We've been continuing to play with our new server all week and thought you might like a quick update on our experience so far.

Noise wise it's virtually silent - the machine's sat behind me as I type this and I can hardly notice it's switched on.

Accessing files stored on the server is quick and painless - we've been connecting from Linux and Windows workstations with no problems.

The GEM/S has pretty much sat there all week working away and we've not had any problems with it at all!

While playing around we also discovered a shared folder on the server with a bunch of open source goodies including Open Office and GIMP. They're not the latest versions though so I think we'll be updating them with the newest versions we download.

We've also discovered that the server comes installed with some additional applications to help with running your small business such as SugarCRM for Customer Relationship Management and DotProject to manage your projects and work load. There's also MyDMS to manage documents and files along with PostNuke to make creating and managing a company Intranet a piece of cake!

There's also a Bulletin Board and IRC chat server installed to ease staff communications.

This little box has eveything a small business needs in a server plus more.

Earlier this week we got our Z1 GEM/S small business server (that's right - not only do we recommend them to people but we use one ourselves as well).

Installation and setup was a doddle - plug in the network cables and the power lead, plug in the Cipher keys for the disk drives, hit the power button and it's up and running in a few minutes!

The initial configuration was simple and easy - set the coputer name and network and after a quick reboot everything's sorted.

Adding new users and mailboxes is straightforward and painless for anyone with some basic computer knowledge - The web based administration interface is well laid out with clear instructions on what to do (and what not to do!).

Adding shared folders is again very simple using the admin pages and each user can be assigned access to the folders as needed. Mapping the folders form a desktop computer worked perfectly.

Backing up files, folders and emails takes no work at all as this is already configured - swapping the backup drives simply involves removing one and inserting the other.
